The term has nothing to do with going back to a dealership, though. Thanks to this capability, Tesla fans (incorrectly) argued that a recall should not be named as such if the problem can be solved with a software update. Many issues could be corrected in software, including safety problems, which allowed Tesla to cut costs significantly. Tesla started the trend of software-defined vehicles and proved that over-the-air updates could significantly change a vehicle's behavior. Safety-related issues are solved thanks to recalls, but for other things that don't concern safety and are equally distasteful, owners have only one solution: sell the car and buy something else. Sometimes, their vehicle was everything they hoped for, but if the carmaker botched the development, they were stuck with a lemon. Before Tesla introduced over-the-air updates to the automotive industry, car buyers had to put up with a car for the rest of their ownership.
